FINAL STATS FOR 2018-2019 SEASON

Notes about data aggregation

  • We do not explicitly partition win or loss types. As such:
    • Wins = regulation, overtime, and shootout wins
    • Losses = regulation, overtime, and shootout losses.

How do I interpret These Figures?

League-wide win/loss percentages are presented below. The win/loss statistics for each team are a function of the categorical score-differential (leading, trailing, or tied) at the end of the first period. Figure 1 displays the league-wide frequencies for each category. Figures 2 and 3 show statistics with respect to each team for away and home splits, respectively.

League-wide Win/Loss Distributions

plot of chunk histNHL_per2 Fig 1: League-wide Win/loss distributions with respect to qualitative score categories. Qualitative probabilities reflect the qualitative score of each team at the end of the 2nd period. Percentages are displayed relative to each facet, i.e., percentages for away statistics sum to 100%, as do those of Home statistics. Dashed lines represent median values of each category

Away Probabilities

plot of chunk awaySplits_per2 Fig 2: Win/loss percentages with respect to qualitative score categories at the end of the 2nd period for all away games. For aesthetics, loss percentages are displayed as negative values and win percentages as positive values. For each team, the absolute values of percentages sum to 100%. Dashed lines represent median values of each category

Home Probabilities

For aesthetics, loss percentages are displayed as negative values and win percentages as positive values. For each team, the absolute values of percentages sum to 100%. Dashed lines represent median values of each category
